Extra-curricular activities
From time to time homeschoolers attempt to force the public school
system to allow them to participate in extra-curricular activities,
usually sports activities. Despite strong progress made in other states
this remains a hard nut to crack in Tennessee. The main obstacle is the
Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association.
Leave CRS An attempt in 2002 was made to require
homeschoolers that left a CRS to report to the LEA how the child was
next to be educated failed badly in a House floor vote.
Truancy
and
Truancy+ Because
homeschoolers have a large amount of autonomy and are frequently out and
about in their communities truancy issues are a concern. When school
districts start aggressively dealing with the problem we must be careful
not to become accidentally caught in their large net as was the case
with some West Tennessee families and eventually resulted in the writing
of the
Jeter Memorandum.
Homeschooling Teachers have attempted in the past to become
exempt from the rule that says if you register with the LEA you must
meet the deadline (which can be waived but isn't always.) This
legislation never went anywhere. |
